Pet Supplies Plus moves to Orangeburg; the distribution center plans to employ 275

Cats are cats. One moment they are attracted to you, the next day they act like they don’t know you, you annoy them and embarrass them. Buzz60’s Maria Mercedes Galuppo has the story.

Michigan-based Pet Supplies Plus plans to begin operations at its 534,702 square foot Orangeburg distribution facility within months.

“We hope that in early January we can start receiving goods into operation and by February and March we will start shipping our first product,” said William Peay, Plant Manager Pet Supplies Plus Orangeburg.

“In the next four months or so we should be up and running,” he said.

Pet Supplies Plus announced in August 2022 plans to invest $53 million and create 275 new jobs over the next five years. Approximately $37.8 million of the company’s investment will be in land and buildings and $15.2 million in machinery and equipment.

It is located in the $25 million Shamrock Commerce Center Industrial Park building on US Highway 301 near Interstate 26.

The business will be serviced by the City of Orangeburg Utilities Department for electricity, water, gas and sewer.

The outer shell of the building is complete. Wiring and electrical work was underway on November 10.

“After that, we will start receiving some of our products and equipment. We will start erecting the shelving that goes inside the building and all the other functions until we have everything in place to start operations,” Peay said.

Harper Contractors of Texas is the general contractor for the project.

Peay said development of the building was on schedule, although there were supply chain issues early on.

He gave a brief tour of the building and explained how the shelving will be stacked six levels throughout the building.

“By this time next year, it should be pretty much full,” Peay said.

The facility will allow Pet Supplies Plus to increase its distribution capabilities in the southeast, Peay said. The company will mainly distribute by truck.

The new operation will be the company’s fourth distribution center located in the United States.

It has a 735,000 square foot distribution center in Seymour, Indiana, as well as smaller facilities in Pennsylvania and Texas.

The Orangeburg plant will be its second largest.

“We have different manufacturers that we buy products from and they ship them to us and we ship them to our stores and/or our customers,” Peay said.

The company’s customers are its nearly 640 stores in the Southeast and Midwest, Peay said. There are corporate and franchise stores.

The Orangeburg factory was built to accommodate the company’s growth.

The company distributes dog food, cat litter, cat food, pet toys and decorative pet clothing.

“It varies – if it’s something a dog, cat, bird, fish or even a lizard can handle, we sell it,” Peay said.

Orangeburg was in “tight heat” with Douglas, Georgia when Pets Supplies Plus was trying to decide where to set up shop.

“The decision was made solely because of the great partnership that I think the management team had with the authorities here in Orangeburg who brought them here,” as well as the package offered to the company, Peay said. . “It was just enough that we decided to make Orangeburg a home.”

The company has already filled several local positions, including maintenance and human resources positions. On November 10, he was interviewing for the supervisor and department head positions.

“We plan to hire people by the hour in early January,” Peay said. “We are going to have a very competitive salary which will also include incentive packages that we will put in place. We expect it to be over $19 an hour to start.

Jobs range from distribution operations to job types such as pick packing, shipping, forklift operators, stacking, packing, loading, and shipping.

There will also be jobs available in information technology and jobs in material handling equipment, Peay said.

“We hope people find this a good opportunity to come and work for a really good company that is growing and growing,” Peay said.

“I loved it personally. I’m a big pet lover – I’ve had dogs all my life – and this company really cares about the animal and really cares about the neighborhood and being part of the neighborhood “All of our customers are called neighbors and our associates are called team members. We’re very close and want to be part of the community, not just another pet store,” he said.
